Incorporating Lounge Areas for Improved Work and Leisure
We’re workspace design and fit-out specialists, but in another sense, we’re also experts in designing lounge areas for our clients. When we plan, design and fit out workspaces, we usually include areas where ‘work’ isn’t the core focus.
Why? Because leisure time in the workplace improves performance – within reason. People who spend up to 15% of their time in the office away from their work see their overall productivity go up. (It can go too far, though, as employees who spend 40% of their office time on leisure activities are significantly less productive.)
So, what leisure activities improve productivity? And what does a leisure-focused workspace look like? Here are seven ways you can incorporate more lounge areas into your workspace:
1. Make space
People often come together for leisure – be it a fitness class, a mental health session or simply a chance to indulge in a hobby, interest or passion. So think about where these group events could take place. It could be a meeting room or even part of an open plan office with some barriers so others aren’t disrupted.
2. Gamify work
Look at your workstreams and office practices and see if any elements or tasks can be gamified. Think beyond financial targets – it could be the speed files are updated, or simply who makes the best tea. As people get engaged, they’ll improve at tasks as well as enjoy the experience. Just be careful things don’t get too competitive.
3. Get sporty
Beyond improving your health, sports can boost morale, improve your mood and even make you more motivated and productive at work. Playing alongside colleagues, managers and senior leaders creates strong bonds too – building a culture people don’t want to leave. Organise competitions with other tenants in your building, and look for lounge areas that could host competitions, like exterior grounds, the roof or the reception area.
4. Design fun
Create interiors and décor that encourage leisure and play. It could be a colourful wall, a game room or posters that lighten the tone. The important thing is to show you value lounge areas and empower your people to take time out for themselves during their busy days.
5. Chill out
Many offices now have extra comfy sofas, private chillout pods and nap rooms. They play an important role in helping workers take real breaks – not only as spaces to recharge batteries and regain focus. Again, they’re a statement from senior management that relaxing (in moderation) is perfectly acceptable.

7. Be social
For some, the most attractive activity could simply be a few drinks with valued colleagues. As well as all the above, be sure to arrange undemanding social events where people can simply turn up, interact and let their hair down a little.
